Labour architectures and do-no-harm strategies in North-South relations still receive too little attention. In many world regions, (inter)national NGOs collaborate with grassroots associations without giving them much agenda-setting power. At the end of partnerships, associations often find themselves structurally weakened. Following social workers in their day-to-day work in a Provincial Capital of Burkina Faso, this film tells the story of two associations in Zorgho: the first works with private donors from the Netherlands who are willing to support the association's projects and ideas. The second has a history of adapting to the agendas of new NGO partners, ultimately leading to the abandonment of its employees, priorities, and projects. However, despite these differences, both organisations face similar dilemmas as they implement development projects while navigating the verge of hardship themselves.
In a quiet street in Frankfurt, only a few meters apart, two bars take different political stances towards the military dictatorship in Eritrea. In the first bar, the picture of Isayas Afewerki, the president of the country, hangs on the wall. Its guests tend to have a loyal attitude towards the regime. The second bar is critical towards the government. Here the guests refuse to pay the ‘diaspora tax’ to the government and only have little understanding for those who defend or even support the regime. This film explores daily interactions in these two bars and follows two protagonists who speak about politics, migration, and belonging. While their stories show how decisive and divisive the political situation in Eritrea can be for the diaspora, they also emphasize what is socially and culturally shared.
This short film follows Max, a young man who sought refuge in Germany during the war in Bosnia. Caught in the nimbus of uncertain residence status, he let us take a glimpse into his everyday struggle for money and his hopes to renovate his family's house in Croatia.
